This free one-day workshop at the City of Seattle's Cedar River Learning Center will introduce landowners to a series of strategies and tools for maximizing the economic potential of conservation-based forest management.  Speakers from companies and organizations in the Northwest that specialize in small woodland management, markets, and other incentive programs will provide thorough overviews of each strategy.

Topics will include:

  • Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification and markets
  • Forestry based carbon offset programs
  • Small-scale processing and direct sales
  • Working forest conservation easements
  • King County's Current Use Taxation and Transfer of Development Rights Programs
  • Non-timber forest products markets
  • Financial assistance programs for small woodland enterprises

Dr. Jerry Franklin of the U.W. College of Forest Resources will give the morning keynote address. Dr. Franklin is a world renowned researcher credited with helping recognize the need for assessing ecosystem structure and function in forest management.

Preregistration for this workshop is required as space is limited. The workshop is free thanks to the generous support of the King County Forestry Opportunity Grants Program. There is a $10 per person charge for lunch. For more information or to register, contact Ian Hanna at 360-379-9421 or via email.

This workshop will be repeated in Chimacum on 12/8, the Nisqually Watershed in January, and Vancouver, WA in March. Check back soon for additional details and locations.
