Forestry 101

NNRG’s Online Forestry Curriculum

Welcome to Forestry 101, an online, self-paced introductory course developed by NNRG to introduce students to the ecology and management of forests in the western Washington.

This free online curriculum is adapted from NNRG’s in-class Forestry Course – created in partnership with teachers at Foster High School – to give students a glimpse into a forestry career and the foundational knowledge needed to work in the field. Throughout this course, students will explore basic principles of forestry, and learn how foresters study, measure, and manage forests to balance environmental health and human needs. Along the way, students will use online tools, practice data collection, and discover how forests play a vital role in addressing climate change, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining communities.

Who it’s For

This is an introductory forestry course for anyone interested in western Washington’s forests and forest management, from high school students to lifelong learners. No prior forestry experience or knowledge is needed.

What to Expect

The course is divided into three units. Unit 1 includes nine lessons focused on forest ecology, exploring how forests function as complex ecosystems. Unit 2 features three lessons on tree measurements, diving into how foresters assess tree growth and forest health. Finally, Unit 3 covers three lessons on forest management and harvest, tying everything together to show how science and stewardship guide real-world forestry practices. Altogether, the course takes about 10 hours to complete.

Earn your NNRG Forestry Course Certificate

Upon completion, students will have the option to take a final exam. Students who complete all modules and pass the final exam will receive an NNRG Forestry Course Certificate of Completion, recognizing their understanding of core forestry concepts.

Why Forestry Education Matters

Forests are a cornerstone of life in the Pacific Northwest – shaping our environment, economy, and culture. Understanding how forests grow, adapt, and are managed helps build the next generation of forest stewards who will care for these vital ecosystems.

We’re grateful to The Russell Family Foundation for their support in making this program possible, and to our partners at the Tukwila School District for helping us shape and pilot-test the course.
