Coming Soon: NNRG’s New Online Forestry Curriculum

Over the past few years, NNRG has been working with teachers at Foster High School to bring hands-on forestry education into the classroom – helping students explore the ecology, history, and management of Pacific Northwest forests. Now, we’re taking that same curriculum online so even more students can access it.

This year, NNRG is launching a virtual, self-paced version of our Forestry 101 course – a free, online learning experience for anyone interested in learning the basics of forestry. The course mirrors the structure of our in-person program, with new elements designed for independent, digital learners.

Students will be able to engage with introductory forestry concepts – from forest ecology and plant identification to tree measurement and carbon storage – at their own pace, from anywhere. For those whose schools don’t offer an introductory forestry program, this virtual course will offer a flexible way to dive in.

Upon completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to take a final exam. Students who complete all modules and pass the exam will receive an NNRG Forestry Course Certificate of Completion, recognizing their understanding of core forestry concepts.

What’s Inside the Curriculum

Structured around the Pacific Education Institute (PEI) standards, the course includes three units that cover:

  • Forest Ecology and History – Learn how Pacific Northwest forests grow, adapt, and change over time.
  • Tree Measurement and Inventory – Practice the skills used by foresters to measure trees and calculate forest carbon.
  • Forest Harvest and Management Planning – Discover how thoughtful planning supports both ecological health and sustainable resource use.

Each unit features interactive content, downloadable worksheets, and links to hands-on activities designed to bring forest science to life.

Looking Ahead

Forests are a cornerstone of life in the Pacific Northwest – shaping our environment, economy, and culture. Understanding how forests grow, adapt, and are managed helps build the next generation of forest stewards who will care for these vital ecosystems.

NNRG’s goal is to make forestry education accessible to all students – whether they’re in a classroom, learning remotely, or exploring the woods near home. We’re excited to see how this new format will broaden access to forestry education and inspire a new generation of forest stewards.

Stay tuned for the official launch of the online curriculum later this year! To learn more or get involved, reach out to us at outreach@nnrg.org.

We’re grateful to The Russell Family Foundation for their support in making this program possible, and to our partners in the Tukwila School District for helping us shape the course.
